Dr. Armstrong’s passion for medicine stems from her son’s struggles after a severe traumatic birth injury which left him with spastic quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy and a severe seizure disorder. He was prescribed Phenobarbital, a barbiturate which is toxic to the liver and kidneys, sedating and elicits hallucinations. Dr. Armstrong had major reservations in giving her newborn child this drug; so she researched and found that Chinese herbs could stop the seizure activity safely and naturally. Because she also wanted to “fix” his brain, she became a Biomedical Engineer to work on brain implants to take over the function of his damaged brain. Dr. Armstrong helped develop implantable neurostimulators for rehabilitation from brain injuries like her son’s, managed clinical trials around the world and trained world-renowned neurosurgeons in the implantation of neurostimulators. She finally decided she did not want to implant her son with these devices, especially since Chinese medicine helped him so much.
